Robert Goldstein (In Memoriam)

BS (MIT), DBA (Harvard)
Associate Professor, Management Information Systems Division

It is with deep regret and profound sadness that we share the news that our longtime colleague, Robert C. (Bob) Goldstein, passed away in October, 2025.

Bob received his doctorate from Harvard Business School and joined the Accounting and Management Information Systems (AMIS) Division at UBC Sauder in 1974. Alongside early MIS faculty members including Al Dexter and Hart Will, Bob played a significant role in shaping the School’s expertise and reputation in the field of Management Information Systems.

Bob’s leadership was instrumental in establishing both an undergraduate MIS program and a first-class MIS doctoral program, one that has graduated many exceptional students who are now leaders in academia today.

Among his many contributions, Bob co-chaired the 1994 International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), which UBC Sauder hosted in Vancouver, BC. This was only the second time the conference had ever been held outside the United States, and Bob was the driving force behind its successful organization.

His 1975 book The Cost of Privacy: Operational and Financial Implications of Databank-Privacy Regulation, based on his doctoral thesis, drew significant attention in academic, practitioner, and public policy circles. He also wrote a book entitled Database: Technology and Management, a topic he was passionate about.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Bob’s family, friends, and former students. His obituary may be found here: https://peacearchnews.com/2025/10/20/robert-charles-goldstein/
